His father died when he was a teenager, and he was influenced by his father’s beliefs and respect for state rights. Walter pursued a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. After winning the elections, he worked for Humphrey for 6 years from 1948 to 1856. After that, he then was seen organizing campaigns for Freeman. His wife’s name was Joan Mondale, who was a National advocate for the arts. She was the chairman of the federation of arts and honorary.

They both shared 3 children, a daughter Eleanor, and 2 sons Ted and William. His wife died in the February of 2014. His death was mourned by President Joe Biden, and he raised flags in honor of Walter. Biden spoke that Walter was a mentor and friend as well. His funeral was kept private, to follow the protocol of Covid-19. A memorial was held for him on May 1st, 2022, and people gave obituary in his memory. The memorial was held at the University of Minnesota, where his family, friends, and colleagues attended, including the President himself Joe Biden.
