Surajit Sengupta is a Bengal legend who used to play Midfielder. He was a part of the Indian National football team that won the Bronze in the 1970 Asia Cup. Surajit Sengupta was only 71 when passed away this Thursday after a prolonged fight against Covid-19. Surajit Sengupta was hospitalized on January 23rd after being tested Covid Positive. His condition only got worse with time and last week he was put on a ventilator. Surajit Sengupta’s demise was like a second shock wave for East Bengal’s sports industry as they still hadn’t recovered from the loss of the legendary player and coach “Subhash Bhowmick” which happened last month.

Surajit Sengupta started his professional football career in a minor league club in Kolkata. It’s was from here he went on to play for the big three clubs of Kolkata. Surajit Sengupta was part of India’s one of the most iconic teams that won consecutive seven “Calcutta Football League titles ” from 1970- 1976, a six-time “IFA Shield“, and a three-time “Durand Cup “. As a player, Surajit Sengupta did have an impressive and controversial career which brought him to the pinnacle of Indian football. Many famous modern football clubs such as “ATK Mohun Bagan” and “SC East Bengal ” shared their condolences via Twitter.
