Who Was Denis Kurilo?
As commander of the 200th separate motorized rifle brigade, Kurilo led his troops into many fierce battles, including Operation Bagration and the Battle of Kursk. Denis Kurilo was an accomplished commander during the Second World War. which was one of the most elite brigades in the Russian Army. Under his command, the 1st Battalion-Tactical Group successfully fought in several critical battles, including the Battle of Kursk and the Battle of Dnieper. Denis Kurilo is also well-known for his heroism and strategic brilliance during the war. The Russian-backed separatist assault on the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka has taken another heavy toll with the death of one of the top pro-Moscow military commanders.

Denis Kurilo, described by his own forces as “acclaimed” and “well-known” was killed during the assault on Avdiivka located outside Kharkiv. Denis Kurilo was described by his colleagues as a man who always dreamed of going to battle. His wife said that she often saw him sitting in an armchair, wrapped in a blanket, watching a video on his phone. The video showed separatists and Ukrainian troops fighting each other, his wife said. The ambush resulted in the death of Denis Kurilo, who could have easily avoided being fired at and destroyed his weak opponents had he stopped firing first.

However, due to the extremely stressful and tense situation that Russian soldiers are often put under by their commanders, Kurilo made an avoidable mistake and led his column straight into the ambush. No one knows what happened to his second-in-command and gunner in that tank who is also presumed dead. This was just one of many times these three infantry brigades have been hit by Ukrainian SSU troops or SBU operatives behind enemy lines as they were conducting reconnaissance or other similar duties where they were supposed to be “safe.”
